CLEAN WATER

Too many Hondurans lack access to safe drinking water in rural Honduras. This is entirely preventable.

  • 2.7 million Hondurans lack access to clean drinking water, with rural areas disproportionately in need.

  • According to data from the World Health Organization, waterborne illnesses are the leading cause of child mortality in Honduras.

  • Improving access to clean drinking water in Honduras is essential for improving the health and well-being of children in the country.

Our Water Work in Honduras

VHC understands the importance of clean water in maintaining good health and quality of life.  Our clean water initiatives aim to provide sustainable solutions for communities in need. We provide reliable clean water services to the communities we serve. We work with local partners to install water filtration systems, construct wells, and provide water purification tablets to ensure that the water being consumed is safe and clean.

VHC has built water systems stretching miles and serving thousands of rural people.  Yet these water systems in rural areas need regular repairs and maintenance to remain operational. To ensure sustainability, we empower communities with the knowledge they need to manage their water systems.

Each community forms their own water committee, and those committees take turns in leadership roles.  Our staff works closely with each community’s water committee to evaluate water, safety and quality, repair leaks, troubleshoot issues, and provide hands-on training.

In 2024, we increased the percent of households now connected to a water system to 88%—a 2% increase from the previous year.  However, we continue investing in improved water management, having added a new, dedicated water program assistant in late 2024 to drive stronger community capacity and management of the clean water supply.

Education is Key

Clean water is critical, but is only truly successful when paired with proper water management and hygiene. That’s why our rural health promotion team visits all of the local schools to provide training on vital topics including disease prevention, healthy lifestyle habits, and proper hygiene. The children learn good hygiene from an early age, and are encouraged to help their families practice the same at home!
