Introducing Our New Name: Volunteers for Honduran Communities

In the 25 years since VHC Medical Brigade began, our team and impact have grown tremendously. Yet, our core mission—improving health and fostering development for Hondurans—remains unchanged. As we’ve evolved into a larger, higher-impact organization, it felt like the right time to adopt a name that better reflects who we are today.

So, why "Volunteers for Honduran Communities?"

Volunteers are at the heart of what we do.

From the beginning, our work has been powered by volunteers. Medical and other professionals from across the U.S. continue to serve through training, surgeries, vision care, and disability rehabilitation. At the same time, Honduran volunteer community health workers provide essential care to thousands in rural Honduras. Our new name reflects the vital contributions of volunteers—both American and Honduran—who are core to our mission.

Community development is central to our impact.

We’ve grown from a traveling brigade into an organization with comprehensive health and development programs. Our team of ten full-time and part-time staff facilitates high-impact international medical missions while also working year-round to support low-income, rural communities. By focusing on community-driven initiatives, we ensure sustainability and local ownership at every step.

Our heart remains in Honduras.

While our roots began in Virginia, we now have volunteers and supporters from across North America. Despite this growth, our focus remains firmly on Honduras—one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere. Our new name reflects this enduring commitment to the people and communities we serve.

And so, Volunteers for Honduran Communities (VHC) was born. This name honors our heritage while embracing our future.

We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the individuals who laid the foundation for this organization—Dr. Barry Byer, Mary Ellen Gannon, and the many dedicated volunteers who have supported us through decades of hard work, financial support, and a shared commitment to service. Your efforts have made it possible for “The Brigade” to grow into the VHC of today.

We are thrilled to officially launch our new name, along with our updated website: www.vhchonduras.org. Our email will also change to community@vhchonduras.org, so please be sure to add us to your safe sender list to ensure our emails don’t go to your spam folder.

Donations can now be made to Volunteers for Honduran Communities and sent to the same address: 1069 W Broad St, Suite 747, Falls Church, VA, 22046.

We remain grateful for the unwavering support we’ve received over the years. It has been essential to everything we do. We look forward to continuing our mission as Volunteers for Honduran Communities!
